Registering with the FRRO

If your visa is for more than 180 days, you have to register with the foreigners' office within 14 days of arriving. Most of it is online now.

Checked October 2026

Who must register

Foreign nationals holding a visa for more than 180 days (for example an employment visa) must register with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) within 14 days of first arrival in India. The deadline runs from arrival, not from the visa date or job start.

How it works

  1. Create an account on the e-FRRO portal.
  2. Upload your passport, visa, photograph, proof of address in India and the employer's undertaking or contract.
  3. Submit the application. In most cases it is processed online and the registration certificate and residential permit are emailed to you.
  4. Some cases need an in-person visit; you will be told if so.

Keep these documents

  • The registration certificate and residential permit
  • Lease agreement or proof of address
  • Employer's letter

Hotels, banks, phone providers and landlords may ask to see them.

Changes, extensions and exit

  • Visa extension: apply on the e-FRRO portal before your visa expires.
  • Change of address or employer: report it through the portal.
  • Leaving India permanently: some cases need an exit permit or a final update; check the portal.

Your employer's role

The employer usually provides the supporting letters and should help you meet the deadline. Some employers use relocation firms for the whole process.
