Language levels
How far you get in Europe depends more on language than on anything else. This is what the levels mean in practice, and what each kind of job expects.
The six levels
European languages are measured on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR):
| Level | What you can do |
|---|---|
| A1 | Introduce yourself, ask simple questions, understand basic signs |
| A2 | Handle shopping, directions, simple everyday conversations |
| B1 | Deal with most daily situations, talk about work, write simple emails |
| B2 | Work in the language: follow meetings, explain things clearly, write reports |
| C1 | Use the language fluently at work, including complex topics |
| C2 | Near-native mastery |
What different jobs need
| Type of role | Typical expectation |
|---|---|
| Software, data, research in international teams | English B2–C1; local language A2–B1 helps a lot |
| Engineering in industry | English B2; local language B1–B2 for promotion |
| Nursing and healthcare | Local language B2, sometimes with a profession-specific exam |
| Hospitality, guest-facing | Local language A2–B1 plus good English |
| Skilled trades and construction | Local language A2–B1 for safety and teamwork |
| Truck and bus driving | Local language A2–B1, plus English for international routes |
Recognised tests
- German: Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD, TestDaF. Nurses in Germany often take telc Deutsch B1–B2 Pflege.
- French: DELF and DALF diplomas, TCF and TEF tests.
- Dutch: CNaVT, the state exams NT2.
- English: IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge English; for nurses, OET is accepted in several countries.
Always check which tests the authority or employer accepts. Some accept only certificates from licensed test centres, and some require all four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking).
How long it takes
As a rough guide, with regular classes and practice:
- A1: 2–3 months
- A2: 2–3 more months
- B1: 3–4 more months
- B2: 4–6 more months
So reaching B2 from zero often takes 12 to 15 months. Intensive courses can shorten this.
Where to learn in India
The Goethe-Institut (Max Mueller Bhavan) and the Alliance Française network have centres in many Indian cities and offer exams on site. Online courses are useful for practice, but live classes with speaking practice make the biggest difference.
