India's business visa
Most European business travellers come in on a business visa or e-visa. It covers meetings, deals and site visits. It does not cover working for an Indian company.
What the business visa covers
Typical permitted activities include:
- meetings, negotiations and signing contracts
- visiting plants, sites and suppliers
- attending trade fairs, conferences and exhibitions
- recruiting staff for your company's Indian operations
- exploring business opportunities or setting up an entity
- technical meetings or after-sales visits related to supplied equipment, within limits
What it does not cover
- Employment by an Indian entity
- Receiving a salary or fees from an Indian source for work in India
- Long-term work on a project in India
If any of these apply, you need an employment visa.
e-business visa
Citizens of most European countries can apply online for an e-business visa without visiting a visa centre. It is typically valid for one year with multiple entries, with limits on the length of each stay. You enter through designated airports and seaports.
Regular business visa
For longer validity or specific activities, apply for a regular business visa through the Indian mission in your country. Long-term business visas can be issued to frequent visitors.
A few tips
- Carry an invitation letter from your Indian counterpart stating the purpose of your visit.
- Keep the letter of your European employer confirming you remain employed and paid there.
- If your visits add up to long periods in India, check your tax position and whether you create a permanent establishment for your employer.
