Construction and trades

Europe's buildings, factories and solar installations need welders, electricians and plumbers, and many countries cannot train them fast enough.

From India to Europe

Welders and electricians are among the most frequently reported shortage occupations in Europe. Plumbers, pipe fitters, HVAC technicians, carpenters and scaffolders follow closely. The energy transition, with heat pumps, solar installations and grid upgrades, adds to the demand.

What to know before applying

  • Certificates matter. For welders, internationally recognised certificates (for example ISO 9606) carry weight. Electricians usually need their training recognised and must learn local safety rules.
  • Language matters on site. Safety briefings and team communication happen in the local language. Basic German, Dutch, Polish or the relevant language makes a big difference.
  • Permits vary. Germany and Austria use skilled worker permits based on recognised training. Poland introduced a new, fully online work permit system in June 2025. Italy offers non-seasonal quota places for building and electrical work.

Watch out for

Construction is a sector where illegal recruitment and underpayment are common. Insist on a written contract, check the employer in the business register, and never pay for a job. See stay safe.

From Europe to India

India's construction boom covers metros, airports, industrial corridors, data centres and housing. European firms contribute:

  • tunnelling and metro engineering
  • prefabrication and modular building systems
  • energy-efficient building technology, insulation and facades
  • project management and safety systems

European engineers and site managers are hired for specialist phases and for training.
